Seems like Bill's question is what to do with the money, not do we
want to move to a different location.
The idea of moving to another service has been raised a number of
times. Bill and I have discussed it extensively and the decision has
always been to stay at the current location. There are a number of
reasons for this. Some of the top ones follow:
1 - There is a concern if we move the group to a private site that
the management of the site will fall to a single individual. This
could be a large problem as that individual on a private site will
likely be the individual that owns the site. We have seen quite a
number of people come and go on this list. If I remember correctly
the most vocal people concerning this issue and the ones pushing to
host and manage the list are no longer on the list by their own
choice. With the public type sites like Yahoo Bill is able to grant
permission to manage the list to a number of people. He has done this
to make sure that if anything happens to him there will be others
that can carry the list forward.
2 - We have a large audience that knows we are here and even more
links on the web that point to us. Much of the success of this list
has been due to Bill's effort to reach crital mass so that the value
was greater than the noise. Moving will likely cause a loss of people
that could adversely affect the group.
2 - Yahoo offers the choice of individual e-mails, digest e-mails,
and web access. In looking over the subscriptions we find that it is
pretty equally split between web and e-mail access. I personally
would not be very active on a web only list, but find the individual
e-mails suit me quite well. I know there are others that are the
other way. Most alternative hosts do not offer the choice.
So, let's get back to Bill's question of what to do with the money.
