I've had several ideas on how to make emc much easier to install for those
that aren't computer weanies or super techs. I had the oportunity to prove
my concept.
Bill Wainright and I have been working on Bill's servo system making some
improvements in the opto-isolator. Bill wanted emc on his PC so he too could
see how emc ran. But Bill did not want to enjoy all the pain that I did when
I set up my forst emc machine. So here is how I got Bill's machine set up
quick;ly and painlessly.
Bill has a Pentium 90 with 48 megs of ram with a 21" viewsonic display and a
newer ISA card. He has the mouse, cdrom, floppy drive.

On my shop pc I have a pentium 200 with 32 MB of ram and a cdrom a serial
mouse and a floppy. I replaced my hard drive with a new unformatted hard
drive.

I loaded RH 5,.2 as a workstation.
I then ran Tim's script to install the RT patch. Next I loaded the emc emc
files emc*.aaa-aad and did the install. I had to change the permission for
run.64step378.
It then ran emc fine.
I took the hardrive out and took it over to bill's house and we removed his
HD and Install the new one. I did not expec5t it to work but when we booted
the computer in loaded to the point that LO of LiLO showed on the screen. I
simply went back to the cmos and selected the auto probe for the HD and
rebooted. This time it ran perfectly. What really surprised me at first was
that he has 48 megs and I set the ini and run files for 32 megs as well as
the lilo. It ran with no problems. After I thought about I realized why.
In any case the use of the generic multisync video card setting and the
generic multisync monitor worked fine. The only problem was that the mouse
did not work. I have to take a look at that. As I recall there is a program
for the mouse configuration.
Emc ran fine otherwise on Bill's PC. It took all of 5 minutes to install
the hard drive, reset the cmos for the new hard drives and load/run emc.
So It would seem that someone might want to take this and make some money
from those that want to try emc without having to enjoy the pain of
installing it. I had enough commands in the hardrive that I showed bill how
to boot the pc, load linux then using the up arrow finding the command for
cd /usr/local/nist/emc and ./run-64step378. It also had the commands for the
PICO editor to edit the .ini and .run files.
In any case this may be of interest to others.
The prerequiste would be a
Pentium PC 90 MHZ or better, 32 Mb ram, a floppy, a generic multisync
display and isa video card. The new hard drive would be installed by the
user and may have to have things like the mouse configuration tweaked. A new
hd would go for say $100 and then another $100 for the guy to load linux/
the patch and emc.
What do you think?
