Hugh,

The LED and resistor will work fine. Admitted there could
be a residual voltage in the caps, but of a small voltage
that you can not damage anything.

For the FUN of it to test out something most tech's learn, but
most engineers forget, is dielectric asoption.

Take a charged cap. Discharge it through a resistor. Remove
the resistor, wait 10 minutes, and measure a VOLTAGE! What?
But the capacitor was fully discovered??? It is a "self recovery"
of the capacitor. Yes, really fun when you get to instrumentation
and have strange results with sample and hold ciruits. ;-)

Yes, as a kid I loved to charge up cap's... then carefully
toss to my brother when I yelled "catch!". ;-)
