on hand in the shop gets used. Anything readly purchaseable gets
used. If that won't suit, something is ordered.
Hobby class machines are less likely to see the power levels, number
of cycles, speed and range of travel, etc as commercial machines.
Specialized cables can be vast overkill. For encoders, step and
direction, etc it is nice to have something shielded, but some
of us get away with twisted pair network cable, at least for a while.
If you plan on ordering cable, perhaps try to get just two different
kinds - one a 4 conductor cable with enough current handling for
servos or steppers (shielding might nor might not help). The other
having at least 4 (preferably more) conductors in a shield for
encoders, etc.
