This could be a cable problem. I recently had to
replace a parallel cable (brand new) that didn't have
several of the necessary leads hooked up. Seems as
though some printers don't use some of the pins we
require - in the interest of 'cheapness' the
manufacturer doesn't include any wires that aren't
normally used by a new printer.
