Your ideas and those from others are probably better but. When I was
trying to get EMC running I simiply put a multimeter (voltage) on the
parallel port outputs. It'll be either 0 or 5 for direction and change
when axis direction changes. The step output is either high or low when
stopped but, this is the test, when an axis is moved the pulses are
averaged by the multimeter and will be somewhere between 0 and 5, like
2 V or such.
If it doesn't work Dan's ideas for debugging seem to be good steps.
Verify port address, verify parallel port pin-out, verify cable.
Low tech for the eletrically challenged but it helped me get EMC
running. :-)
