I understand what you are saying about the user not the tool, but if the
program has to cut a series of archs with a ball mill to make a patteren, I
figure I can at least spot a bad one. I guess I just need some one to hold
my hand and say "Yes little buddy, you can mill your paintball gun bodies
with this-- you realy don't need to buy a fadal for the spare bed room"

Craig,
I have the Shoptask prior to the current model and it was an easy CNC
conversion. I have a friend that has what looks to be the same model Smith
as you are looking at. It is a few years old and was not billed as "CNC".
The Smithy he has is going to be a lot of work to convert to CNC as it is
not setup with brackets or pulleys to mount motors. I don't see in the
picture on the site how they attach the motors on the Granite 1324 either.
The other thing between the Smithy and the Shoptask is that the Smithy has
the mill quill closer to the column. On my friends he has to pull the chuck
to do most anything on the mill. With the Shoptask most milling can be done
with the chuck in place and only larger items need to have the chuck
removed.
Samples of the work will not really tell you much about the machine and will
tell you lots about the operator and the quality of the tooling.
