Hello Joe,
I cannot recomend a book because I learned my
trade on this matter from my father a gun smith tecnician
who took every muesum machine home. But a while ago I
found a link in www.lathes.co.uk where the reconstruction of
lathes was very good explained.
And there is a guy somewhere in the states who wrote a few books
on scraping. If I remember right his name is Martin Morgan.
Search for scraping rulers and he must come up easily. His Website
contains quite a few good hints and explanations.

My dear hint for Bridgeport is leave the variable pulleys in excellent
condition. Snug but soft moving bushings and keyways!
If not it will start to eat up belts and they are expensive.
