Randy -

I've been searching the net for modern "lunchboxes", and as Jon
said, it seems they are generally pretty expensive to buy new.
They seem to be mostly catering towards the "industrial" market.
OTOH, what about PC's like your I-opener? I heard it requires
hacking, and do you end up with a PCI slot? I recall seeing some
ads recently for an integrated LCD & PC for desktops, like the
I-opener. Dell? Hitachi? It only makes sense now that LCD
prices have really come down. There oughtta be an entry-level
system with minimum PIII, 800Mhz, 64 meg, 15"TFT LCD, CD-rom, 18Gb
HDD, FDD, and Ethernet, for something like $1199. Has anyone come
across something like this?

I got my lunchbox at a yard sale (spur of the moment buy) for $50.
It has
a 640x480 plasma display and had a dead 386 motherboard and tiny
hard
drive. It is a "Compact PC-III".

The good news is, that it takes a standard AT-size motherboard,
and I
retrofitted it with a 486-66 with PCI video card and a larger hard
drive
(200MB, 500MB? I forget right now). I got Windows95 running on it
just as
an exercise, but it's now running DR-DOS. It was to be my CNC
controller,
but is too slow. I had tried a faster Pentium motherboard in it
briefly,
but there was some problem with the video card (the video needs to
go out
the VESA connector and through a little interface board), but then
I got
the i-opener (200 MHz Winchip) that is running CNC Pro well, so
the
lunchbox is in my closet.

As someone else said, they are on eBay most of the time. If you
find one,
I think you can be confident you can upgrade it. OTOH, if you
might be
interested in mine email me offlist.

Best regards,

Randy
