Murray: Ever considered WELDING (MIG) two slabs of 5/16" or 3/8" plate???
With a little experience, you can "weld both sides" in such a way that the
inevitable "warp" will only "bring it back to square". Easier to cut the big
ol' round hole (and 4 tapped bolt-holes?) before welding, too!
