Emco Compact 5 conversion

I've got a Mark II Compact 5 CNC machine that I rescued from my previous
employer. The machine has a couple of problems, notably a dodgy power
supply and/or motherboard, and it's lost the ability to count the spindle
speed.

As I'm not really interested in fixing it up (even working properly, it
would still have a small instruction set, a hideous tape drive (which is
acting a bit dodgy as well!) and no PC interface), I've been thinking it
would make a good candidate for conversion to run straight from a PC running
something like TurboCNC.

Has anyone out there done this? I've got just enough electrics/electronics
knowledge to be dangerous. Doing the conversion would be no problem, but
getting it right in the planning stage would be. What I'm looking for is
some links to pages that cover this sort of conversion, a bit of theory and
lots of practical. In the end, I want to run the machine to produce
something useful, not make it my life's work getting to run.

Cheers

John
