i had something very similar happen with a 'partiallly' supported video
card. it would work the first couple of times i booted, then something
would 'overload' and it wouldn't boot into graphical mode correctly, got all
kinds of strang things. i went and bought a matrox g-200 and all of it went
away. look around, i picked mine up for around 20 u.s. also had some
strang problems with old monitors (ive got a broom closet full of ancient
computers (486's and p1's)) some of them would work a few times overclocked
and then refuse to functino untill you cranked them back---Dave L.

This may sound strange, it had the mill with EMC with a blue background and
I could select options with the mouse AND it had "back and next buttons" at
the bottom. It sounds like Graphic mode. But I got this when I was loading.
I got through that after messing with it. Now when I turn on the computer
and boots off C drive thats when I get the gray and light gray vertical
lines.

What did the display look like during the install? Was there a full
screen pic of a mill and EMC letters and gray displays that let you select
options with a mouse (graphic mode) or was the install a set of centered
widgets with yes and back buttons (text mode)?

Red Hat has such a list.
