In most versions of XFree86 (the X windows screen server) using these
keys (Ctrl-Alt- right hand Plus Key) will cycle through the possible video
modes. You might try this to see if you can get to a mode your monitor will

sync to. Most likely, you have the monitor setting in /etc/X11/XF86Config
set to a different type than your actual monitor, and because the screen
resolution is higher with that monitor, it selects a mode that is
incompatible
with the actual monitor on the computer. If you can get it to sync up, you
might be able to change the XF86Config file or use a utility to change your
monitor setting.
