I've worked on a few of those line tracers in the past...

Your motor has a built in DC "tac" generator that the line tracer
control uses to sense how fast the motor is moving. Yours outputs 14
volts per 1000 RPM. Or 1.4 volts at 100 RPM, for example.

Yes, the tac generator is useless for POSITION feedback, so you need
to add your own quadrature encoder. Some servo drives can use tac
for damping, but its usually optional.
