By amazing co-incidence, the 1/4 HP Leeson 90VDC motors I am using
are 3.1" dia * 8" long (square flange is 3.15" square). The output
shaft is 1/2" dia * 1.5" long. Running my 77 Volt power supplies
and a 5 TPI leadscrew gives it 10 inch/second (600 ipm) no-load
speeds. You can buy these anywhere (though I offer a discount on
two or more). I haven't measured the force they can transmit
(I'm scared to get in the way when they are moving that fast!)
but I'm sure its in the many hundreds (if not a thousand or two)
pounds!

The (probably fatal) downside for you is they are single-shafted
motors, and the encoder must be mounted elsewhere (perhaps on
the output shaft side of the motor). USDigital has thru-shaft
encoders, so maybe that can work for you.
