I'm sure you have seen them before, You cut out a piece of one type
of wood and inlay it into a routed or cut shape in another piece of wood

You can also inlay brass, gold, mother of pearl, whatever, into wood, metal
jewlery etc. Using epoxy is sort of a cheating way to do it. Rout out the
shape and pour in some colored epoxy. Once it is dry, sand it smooth
with the surface of the wood.
