Marty,

Regarding your grinder, surface grinders can be automated with
hydraulics. A long ram and valving to cause the oscillating motion
is all it takes. As a plus to this method, stops can be
interconnected with the valves to allow variable stroke length.
Incorporate a ratchet & pawl on the Y axis handwheel and it'll
automatically step over on every longitudinal stroke.

Just a thought...the Micromaster is considered one of the premiere
grinders. I bet you could easily trade your manual model for another
brand that's already automated.
