USB instead of Parallel Port drivers

All,

For all you electrical engineer types out there has anyone examined using either firewire or USB for stepper control? It seems infinitely more expandable than PP but not being very electronic savy, I'm not sure how complicated it would be...

Can anyone who has bought long (>4') acme or ball screws give me some ideas on how expensive these beasts are?
