We're in agreement here, I think. I tried to load my post with
enough "expert", "perfection-required" type thinking to let everyone
know this is a bad idea; and followed it up with an economic argument
against...

P.S. But the commercially available quick-change spindle first
mentioned WILL "extend" the bit a ways, and was found safe enough for
Porter-cable to offer it as a "factory" item...
