It has been on my someday/maybe list to buy a copy of Corel just for its
trace function. You mention version 8 or 9. Have you worked with both. Any
differences I should care about?
My primary interest would be to take a line drawing or sketch of a part,
trace it clean it up and then export it so that I can bring it into Dolphin
CAD/CAM to define the cutting operations.

Corel Draw has a nice "Trace" feature that will outline a graphic
image or if the image is a line drawing, it will trace it exactly.
Then you can save it as a .dxf
You can find Corel Draw V8.0 and 9.0 from around $20-50 on Ebay.
