Yup, a company is not allowed to decide who to sell to except in cases
of hazardous or controlled substances. There are ways that some
companies get around this legally, by making you sign a non-disclosure
agreement before being allowed to see/use/buy the equipment. Then,
they can restrict access to spares, etc. But, if they sell the whole
machine openly to all comers, then they have to sell spares to all comers,
too. I'm not a lawyer, but that is my understanding of some FTC regulations

that were enacted in the late 1960's, I think. Up until that time, it was
essentially impossible for an individual to buy ANY spare appliance
parts. They were only sold to approved service people.

Yes, it's funny that these two kinds of behavior go together. One thing to
keep firmly in mind is that this sort of self defeating behavior is NOT good

business, and many companies that operate like that don't make it. Then,
there won't be ANY spare parts!
