Well, last night I got brave, and disassembled (partially) the nuts...
What I found, was that the assy is actually two nuts, that share the
balls between the two. They are held together with the mounting bolts.
There is a ground spacer between the two that sets the preload (I'm
guessing) between the two halves. The end sections are just caps for the
teflon? seals on each end. Fortunately, the fact that the nuts were
greased, kept all the little balls from escaping, as I opened up the nut
in an effort to see what could be machined to p ackage them in the
B'port.
So, armed with this knowledge, it seems very likely that I'll be able
to cut a bit of the mounting flange off of the top of the X-axis nut and
package these guys in the old B'port. This was the first time I had the
table off the ways, and I was a bit saddeded to see all the wear that
exists, especially in light of having just looked at the unworn linear
ball beaing ways on the soon to be scrapped Cinci... If it onlf weighed
a few tons less, and was a few feet smalle r...
Anyway, if you look at some of the ball nut/yoke assys in the B'port
kits, like the HIWIN one mentioned here you will see that they have a
flattened top. This is needed to clear the table, and will have to be
machined into the Cinci nut to package it.I'm now evaluating the new
fyoke fr om scratch, or bushing adapter like Roland suggested in HSM
mounting method. Next comes the screw end machining decisions...
