The encoders are magnetic, a variety of rotary inductosyn. You also
trashed the circuitry to read them. Usually it is on a bunch of big
1" x 2" metal cans that apparently were Analog Devices 1S80 or
similar devices but with proprietary labels (and probably internal
features, too).
