Hi All:
I don't know what criteria you are using to judge the utility of these
machines, but for 7 thousand quid, I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot
pole.
They've got almost no throat depth, and the goofy bolt-on tailstock is not
useful at all in my opinion.
They look well made, certainly compared to Chinese machines, but I don't
think you can build very much on one of these without a lot of frustration.
I'd buy a pair of dedicated machines for this kind of cash, and I'm sure I'd
be ahead.
If I really wanted a combo, I'd try to get a Meyer and Burger machine (look
at the "lathes" site that Tony Griffiths has set up)
Although lightweight, it looks to me to be the best engineered of any combo
machine I have seen.
You could also consider something like a Deckel FV1 and set up a chuck on it
for turning.
The biggest thing I don't like about the Deckel is the lack of a quill.
The GOL matic...way overpriced in my opinion.
Cheers
Marcus

I picked up some brochures and a price list from the Wembley Model
engineering exhibition recently. Brochure price for the MD 23K (470mm
table length) is £3,194.00. MD 23L (570mm table length) is
£3,888.00.
(ex vat).
They also do the GOLmatic MD 24 which is similar to the above, the
only difference appears to be an inverter driven spindle. MD 24-L
(570mm table ) £6,937.00. MD-24 EL (720mm table) £7,430.00.
According to the brochure the MD 24 models are available with ball
screws for about £1,100.00 extra.
They had a CNC version on display at the exhibition, I didn't like
the control because it couldn't (apparently) run an externally
generated (CadCam) program, and looked clumsy to use.
the machines looked to be of a very good build quality, with a lot of
available accessories.
