I have a 4-axis card set consisting of encoder counters, +/- 10V DACs
and digital I/O with 16 contact inputs and up to 8 SSR outputs. It connects
to the parallel port. The total cost in that configuration is $650.

This hardware is supported by EMC so far, but the interface details are
on the web pages, so you could write your own drivers or adapt any
other software that allows user-written drivers.
