That's one heck of a Variac. I've got a 10 Amp 250 Volt Variac and it's
huge! I think you're off somewhere. AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, Variacs are not
isolated from the mains. You need a true transformer not an autotransformer
like a Variac.
You can put a Variac ahead of a power transformer to vary the output of the
transformer:
120AC -> line fuse -> Variac -> Transformer -> rectifier -> filter cap ->
fuse -> Gecko ;-)
