Derek,

Another possibiliy is you have a very low inductance motor. Try this
if can: Disconnect the load from the motor shaft. Let the motor sit
for a while powered up. If it still gets hot you have a motor
problem. If it is stays cold, you have a load problem (something is
putting a continuous load on it). This isn't a Z axis is it?
