From my experience you will get this to happen if you have the gain cranked
too high. It was more prevalent with the older model without the anti-dither
circuit, but even the new revision can be made to exhibit the same effect.
If the motor is dithering to aggressively it will start to heat. What I
found when I had the problems with the newer revision drives was that I had
the gain and dampening out of sync with each other. The effect was that at
rest the motors would be very still with 1 - 2 dither moments a second.
But, every now and then they would stop and be dithering at a much more
rapid rate. When that happened they would start heating quickly. If I moved
the axis they would often calm down. The cure was to retune the drive.
