Encoder to Step/Dir converter MPG

Has anyone come up with a simple circuit to convert Quadrature counts
to step/dir signals.
I want to use an encoder to make a "puck" like the big boys use.
Have you seen how much they charge for those pulse generators?
It can't be that hard.
It may have already been covered on the list while I was away.
