Hi,Im sure this sounds very familiar to everyone and I dont mean to
make a complicated subject with alot of variables seem like it could
be simplified but im getting ready to spend some hard earned money
and was wondering if anyone has done a "shootout" on the small cnc
desktop mills.Im looking for actuall side by side performance
comparison with some parameters like a cost cap of say 4 to 5k max
for complete systems etc.It would be great if someone would put them
all on a table ,use the same software, steppers ,cutter, material etc
and have them make the same part at the same time so we could compare
the results in speed, percision, manufactures claims for cutting
metal, dealer support, tooling availability etc.It could be taped and
made into an mpeg for all to see or you could sell a video,I would
buy one yesterday! If someone did an indepth comparison of the
Sherline,Taig,Maxnc and others you would make a small fortune in book
sales and I might finally part with some cash.At this point it would
be nice just to see a picture of them all side by side for visuall
size comparison. You might even get the manufactures to lend a machine
each to particapate in the challenge, automobile makers do this all
the time for the magazines.I've spent the last couple months on the
net looking through the different groups, manufactures sites, ordering
catalogs, deciding whether to build my own or not etc.One thing that
seems to be important to alot of people, including myself, in the
groups is can they cut aluminum,if so then how much per pass
(variables again),how fast(rapides etc.) and with what kind of
repeatability. You could look at things like noise, vibration and
harshness(sorry,I was a master automobile technitian,team leader in a
past life and this term wont leave me.....talk about rapid movement!
you should try that occupation!),fit and finish etc.I think most of
us newcomers just want to make small usefull metal parts in great
enough quanity so as to retire to the islands somewhere and like the
automation these machines provide, but which one?.I realize its a
large subject to cover and has been in bits and pieces in the various
groups but a comprehensive test is much needed to sort it all out.As
a newcomer its like being forever stuck in the cereal isle!?Any
takers? Thanks
