Forgive me my lack of electronic perfection when trying to explain, in as
simple a manner as possible, a technical concept to a non-technical user.

The "extra current" I referred to is the current in the coil at any given
time before saturation/limiting as a result of the faster ramp up.

Comparing the plot of coil current as a function of time for the same motor,
one with a low voltage, one with a higher voltage and a series resistor, one
will indeed see "extra current" at the beginning of the latter plot. At high
enough speeds, one will see "extra current" for all of the plot.
