The optical mouse is made by Agilent for HP and others is a tiny vidio
camera that images the paper or whatever and than measures the movement.
There are at least two problems with idea. One is that the sensor has to be
very close to the object scanned and light must be pumped to it. Second the
senser might not be fast enough to show useful resolution. Some of the
sensors do have a quad output that might be useful. Check out
