new to the hobby

Hello there
i am new to the hobby and i will like some advice on cnc mini lathe
I have a Sherline 4000 cnc ready lathe ,and have a radio shock old
computer and controller.
I like to get a newer controller (2 axis x & z )or (3 axis x y z )
My question is what is the chip way to go ?? and if i get 3 axis can i
use it on a lathe and mill if i need to ????
