While on the subject of Vector IGES import I will share my experience
with BobCAD.
I was considering BobCAD back in feburary, they have a new version
and it is pretty affordable.
I downloaded the demo and tried to import an IGES file and had
problems with untrimmed surfaces. I.E. ALL of the surfaces came in
untrimmed.
I called BobCad and explained the problem. I told them I was using
Rhino and I could export IGES with many different options that I
really don't understand. I offered to email them the file.
One of their people called me back and I explained the problem
again. She said she would look into it and get back with me. They
didn't. To their credit it was a pretty complicated surface model.
Rhino was the only (affordable) package that could handle it. If
only Rhino would come up with a CAM module!!
We bought Edge Cam at work so now it is a moot point. I guess my
point is that besides the .stl packages like Millwizard and .stlWorks
I have not seen the <1000 packages handle 3D models very well. I'm
not knocking Vector cause I never tried it but it seems like pushing
the limits of their capabilities.
Just so you guys know my opinion. Rhino is the most powerful CAD
package for the money ever invented. Granted it is not parametric
(and that really bugs us engineers) but with some skill and patience
you can model anything. Try that for 800 bucks anywhere else.
Besides the fact that you can do most of what you need with the free
demo and 20 saves.
