3 phase, and more.

Hi all,
I have not had time to chat on this list for awhile, and there is
a few things I would have like to ask, but then I forget it.
First a note on dates: DOS will read the BIOS, date and this
starts at 1980. I am not sure about Linux, - but if it is like
other Unixes, then the start date would be 1970. There might be
some table that holds the date information a bit different than
how DOS does it. So it should be possible to have some offset
set. By the way, I do think there some info at the Linux
documentetation project on this, but have not checked.
3 phase:
------
I have noticed that some have been talking about 3phase
converters. I am a bit currious about "rotary" converters. How do
they work, what do you need to build one of these ?
I don't have a clue, but if you connected to motors together, a
single phase and a 3phase, running the single phase as a motor, -
could you output 3 phase voltages at the other motor ?
How do you do that ?
For some time, I have wondered if you could build a generator out
of a normal 3phase motor. One thing that is possible, is just to
rev it up, and it will start to deliver energy back to the line.
That is - it will work as a generator, but it needs to be hooked
on the power line. I wondered it it was possible to magnetize it
with a low electronic made current, and use it off line.
Any ideas ?
( I wanted to drive it with a gasoline engine - and I have also
wondered it I should try to change the rotor. What do these small
generators use, permanent magnets ? )
Hot air Pencil/sucker:
----------------
Clever ! I did something similear many years ago, but this was
a tin sucker kind of setup. I just used an old compresser from a
refrigerator with a bleed valve. I was a bit concerned about
getting tin into it, so I just made a couplte of nipples in the
cap of a ordinary glass jar, with one piece of pipe running
down to the bottom, and filled it a quarter up with water. I made
the whole thing in less than 30 minutes, so I didn't care to much
about the design.
I spent most time on a 3-way valve I operated with my foot. It
worked but, it was crude and I should have spent some more time
on some details. I used a lenght of hose to the valve. This made a
time - delay delay before you got the suction you wanted. But
maybe this could give someone an idea, and maybe do it better than
I did it.
