Hi:
It's not always necessary to center drill first.
Spotting and Screw machine drills are available that are stubby.
It is also possible to grind a "self centering" point on the tip of these
drills to further improve their self centering ability.
The geometry is complex and requires a properly set up drill grinder, but
this technique is used often in production. to avoid extra step of center
drilling.
