If you are just trying to catch the marker pulse, what about using a
logic probe? You may have to make a custom cable (make sure you crimp,
solder and use 16G ultra flexible cable...:-)) so you don't have to hold
the probe point in contact with the correct pin.

Most logic probes are pretty frugal on the power they draw so you may be
able to use the encoder 5V rail - but you should double check things -
before you connect.
