Hi,
Maplin do a nifty counter which will take a TTL input they can be found at
www.maplin.co.uk catalogue number FS13P @ £9.99 it is a very cheap
solution. I am thinking of putting together a circuit to do just this with
the addition of USDigital's quadrature reader chip. I will post the results.

| If you are just trying to catch the marker pulse, what about using a
| logic probe? You may have to make a custom cable (make sure you crimp,
| solder and use 16G ultra flexible cable...:-)) so you don't have to hold
| the probe point in contact with the correct pin.

| Most logic probes are pretty frugal on the power they draw so you may be
| able to use the encoder 5V rail - but you should double check things -
| before you connect.
