Hi John;

With the flat facing you, and the leads pointed down, the pins are (from
left to right) E-B-C for a 2N3904, just as you describe. The 2N3904 is
one of the very common NPN small signal/switching transistors, perhaps
only slightly less have been used than the 2N2222. The 2N3906 is the
PNP brother/sister of the 2N3904.
