I am not aware of what Acroloop sells now, but four years ago I bought an
ACR2000 board. This was a fairly expensive (~$2000) 4 axis board. It has
output plug-in modules (like SIMM's) that allow either or servos and
steppers (up to 8 axis). It has it's own on-board DSP processor, encoder
inputs, and D/A and A/D. I did not uses it for CNC, so I don't know how it
would work for that. I used it for controlling 3 radar scan platforms.
Basically you download a programs to the board (written in a Basic-like
language) and let it run. This relieves the PC's CPU from all the motion
calculations, like acceleration, deceleration, PID, etc. I am not sure how
this would work with EMC. I think you could make it work, but there are
other less expensive boards that would work as well or better. Maybe
Acroloop sells less expensive boards without DSP's (like STG?), I am not
familiar with their current product line.

I found the board to be of very high quality, as was factory support. The
board came with software tools for several versions of MS OS's. My system
ran in DOS, but I often used Window95 tools to debug and tune the PID.
Can't remember if there were Linux tools, but I'm sure the board would run
under Linux since all communications was register based.

Bottom line - Good boards, good company. Make sure the board does what you
need. Tell them what you are trying to do and see what they say.
