Sorry last post on this, in my late night ramblings I forgot to
include any references. You can find all the basic equations for
motor sizing, currents, wire sizes and transformers at this site.

By working the numbers you get a feel for the design trade offs and
what to look for in components. In general the torque limit is the
driving factor for large work. You work out the motor /gearing
combination to reach this goal then see if the speed can be reached.
Newer inverter class motors can be selected that will run several
times over rated speed to get to the max spindle speed desired, but
there are few that can develop substantial additional torque for any
length of time.
