Hi, Hoyt:
I like your idea of using a dial indicator as a digitizing probe. When you
were using it, did you get any idea of the accuracy by measuring the
deflection of the indicator when each point was measured and determining
some statistics on how much deflection was "normal" and what the deviation
about the "normal" deviation was? It'd be interesting to know.

|
|Pretty easy. I digitize with electrical contact method. I insulate the
|mount of a dial indicator from machine, connect to aux input. The tip of
|the indicator is the probing point. The indicator mechanism serves as
|over-run protection. Software polls the aux input and makes appropriate
|moves depending on open/closed status, hence finding the exact point of
|contact. Dial needle doesn't even flicker when it touches down. Software
|also writes to file commands corresponding to the required moves to
|duplicate the part later. Then the indicator is replaced with tool having
|same tip config. Voila. I can also record the coords of the points if all I
|want is a record of the profile.
