I don't know about Hall effect switches being any good because of Hysteresis
and the fact that a magnet is needed and mounting would be critical as the
Hall transistor has to pass the magnet in a certain way.
However, I have used Balluff proximity sensors (1/4" barrel, 5 volt) that
worked great and had excellent repeatability. I wouldn't bother with a
mechanical switch.
