Demagnetization-
Well that is one reason my estop shorting resistor is 5 times the armature
resistance.
It is enough to stop the motor in the space I need to stop it, but no more.
My peak servo current is speced at 26 amps per axis.
In a non estop deceleration my amp maker advises me that I will have
the potential for a large power supply regeneration voltage
rise with their product.
I wouldn't call it a common problem as most folks here are not
doing quick 600 ipm stops of 800 kg effective mass. But I am!
Another manufacturers description is here:
http://www.idcmotion.com/pdf/8403.pdf on page 2.
anyway the circuit will take care of that and inductive energy too.
5 joules of the 25 I mentioned is due to motor inductance.
You ought to see the big gantry in a controlled rapid stop.
It zips along and then makes kind of a "bong" sound
on stopping like someone hit it with a hammer. I think I
am getting EMC tuned up pretty well!
Oh I have to tell you a very short story... about 15 years
ago I invented a car side mirror defroster that uses a
positive temperature coefficient polymer resistor I developed.
After it melts the ice and warms the resistance rises, and
it powers down and uses LESS WATTS haha!
We have even sold a couple of them.
