Have you tried asking Dan if he could help you with these (both the chips
and getting the board figured out)?
I have been using Dan's board for about 1 year now and I run it at the full
5 amp level. I have not had a single failure with any components on the
board. If you are smoking the 5v regulator there is definitely something
wrong in your board.
