I'm not sure if this was Jimmie Durantie or possible Red Skelton ?

anyway, back to the topic, I assumed that timing belts were better
than gears and offers little if any play in a drive train.

Here and I was hoping to use a single stepper and drive a pair of
lead screws by just expanding the distance with a couple long belts.
