What are you going to make with your machine? Unfortunately, I missed any post from you indicating what style or type of machine you are building. That too has some to do with "how low is low".....
At any rate, some seem to over react to "backlash" when it comes to toothed belts. I feel, they work excellent under typical circumstances.
See mine in application in the second pictures here: http://www.data-cut.com/page5mv.html
For example, If I set up a dial indicator on any axis and then tell my machine to move +.001... golly, it moves .001. If I move it back .001.... It moves back .001. Backlash ?? What
Backlash.
I guess I could "force" backlash by trying to use a dull bit or a drill bit instead of the right thing to cut sideways.
I am using the XL series from Mcmaster-Carr. (3/8" wide) Again, not knowing your machine design,, If I were shooting for 600 oz motors on a full size mill, I would opt for a wider belt but that's
about it.
Belts are great for most applications us homebuilders make machines for. If your making Jarvic Heart parts or something.... that's different.
