Encoder line count.....

Group,
Are encoder line counts usually expressed in an abreviated form? For
instance, I have an encoder with a line count of 2048 (a power of two
thingie). Would this be referred to as a 2000 line encoder for ease
of description.
Likewise when you say 1000 line encoder is that really one with 1024
lines? Or does a 1000 line unit have exactly 1000 lines?
I'm asking because I have a stand-alone programmable servo controller
made for a rotary axis. They specify to use a 1000 line encoder. If
they actually mean 1024 then I can use the 2048 line model and double
my angular rotation when I program it. Doubling the programmed angle
I can deal with, I don't want to have to deal with a ratio,
2048/1000, for angles, can't do that in my head.
thanks,
Doug
