Hi Wally,
The taper of the pipe tap means that there is a intersection of slope
and diameter. I do the same thing, I take my fitting, run the tap
in a little over half way, then test the fitting. repeat until I'm
happy with the hole.
Once I get a good start on the fitting, I mark the tap for the next
time. speeds up the second time, but each set-up is time consuming.
I haven't heard of a better way, so I'll be listening for some of the
comments as well.
