in production we use a tapered thread plug guage ,its got a step ground
in at the right depth so you can screw it in and the step should be flush
with end of the part (+/- 1 turn)
you could make your own (non-precision) guage from some extra fittings
by screwing them together handtight and filing a step where they meet
or shooting it with a bit of spraypaint ,shoot the tap at depth as well
also the Machinery's Handbook has some tables that list the length for
handtight engagement and the minor diameter at that length
(its spread over several pages) so you could measure how far a guage pin
drops in
